Hello. I'm Danielle Hazard, author of True Eats. I am so excited for this opportunity to
share with you and I hope you enjoy reading along!
So, what makes me an expert on food and cooking? Cooking and healthy food have always been part of my life. As the daughter of a dentist, junk food was limited in my house and going out to eat was a treat. Both my mom and step-mom are great cooks and the majority of my memories with grandmothers are of them cooking a food amazing from scratch.
It wasn't until college that I realized how much I truly enjoy learning about food, how it affects our bodies and the science of cooking. In 2003 I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Food Science and Nutrition, which has given me a solid foundation and the ability to excel in my field.
After graduating, I got my first job in the field with the American Red Cross WIC (Women, Infant's and Children) program, where I provided nutrition counseling and breastfeeding support to low income women and children. Soon thereafter, I followed my (now) husband to Washington, D.C., where I got a job working for an amazing non-profit organization, The Center for Science in the Public Interest. In the 6+ years I worked there, I did tons of research on grocery store and restaurant foods, I worked alongside the resident chef testing and tasting recipes, and sampled 1000's of food products to help determine which were worthy for recommendation in CSPI's Nutrition Action Healthletter.
After moving back to California to be closer to family (and the beach), I worked a couple part-time jobs. I worked at Sur la Table, helping in their cooking school and at a local catering company as a prep cook and baker. It was those 2 jobs that really helped me refine my cooking skills, allowing me to create my own unique, delicious recipes.
Currently, I am a freelance recipe developer and I am part of the Skinnytaste cookbook team (I work with both authors on nutrition analysis and proofreading). I am a mother to 2 beautiful children, both of which are incredibly active and love to eat.
I created this site because I have such a unique blend of experience, knowledge, and passion that I can't help but share with you. I hope you learn new things, are inspired to cook more, eat healthfully and take care of yourself. Cheers to simplifying food and cooking!!!
